Did You Know:
- Vanilla extract is made from the fruit of the Vanilla orchid (primarily Vanilla planifolia). Of over 800 genera of orchids, Vanilla is one of only five that grow as climbing vines.
- The natural pollinator of Vanilla planifolia is the Melipona bee, found only in Mexico.
- Each flower on the Vanilla planifolia vine only opens for 24 hours and must be pollinated within 8 to 12 hours in order for a fruit pod to be produced, so when Vanilla is grown outside of Mexico, each flower is pollinated by hand.
